It is October, 1944. With a rumble of thunder in the air a summer storm sweeps across the landscape as B-17 Fortresses of the 381st Bomb Group return from a deep penetration daylight raid. Descending into their base at Ridgewell, several of the returning aircraft have received damage from flak or fighters; one of the last stragglers having made the trip home with part of her bomb bay shot away. However, the beautiful Essex countryside, stretching to the horizon, welcomes the weary crews home.
